TOEIC scores and levels: which score for which level?
ETS, the organisation that runs the TOEIC, publishes how its scores map to the levels of the Common European Framework (CEFR). Here is the table, what to aim for if you need B2, and how to read your result.
The levels table
Minimum scores for each level. Listening and Reading are each scored out of 495.
| Level | Listening | Reading | Total ≈ |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1 · Beginner | 60 | 60 | 120 |
| A2 · Elementary | 110 | 115 | 225 |
| B1 · Intermediate | 275 | 275 | 550 |
| B2 · Upper intermediate | 400 | 385 | 785 |
| C1 · Advanced | 490 | 455 | 945 |

Level B2: 785 points?
Many business and engineering schools require level B2 to award their degree, often expressed as “785 on the TOEIC”. Careful: according to ETS, B2 means at least 400 in Listening and 385 in Reading. A total of 785 made of 450 in Listening and 335 in Reading is therefore not B2 in both skills. Check your school’s exact rule.
How to read your score
- The total (10 to 990) is the sum of two scores out of 495.
- Each skill counts: look at Listening and Reading separately to see where to improve.
- Scores are accepted for 2 years by most organisations and schools.
